George F. McClure Biography
Having worked as a teacher, design engineer, a systems engineer, a technical director,
a research & technology manager, a program manager and an engineering department manager,
he has experienced and appreciated all aspects of an engineering career.
In professional activities for IEEE-USA, he chaired the Pensions
Committee and the Engineering Employment Benefits Committee, organized the program
for several PACE Conferences, and served on the board for United States Activities
as chair for the Career Activities Council. More recently, he has served as vice
chair for Technology Policy Activities, as editor for Technology Policy, as a member
of the Communications Committee, as past chair of the Career & Workforce Policy Committee,
and as a member of the regional PACE Committee.
He collaborated on a brochure for IEEE-USA on the career benefits
of professionalism, developed another on IEEE society member benefits for VTS, and is
working on a third for section membership development in Region 3. He has presented
papers at every PACE or Professional Development conference or Workshop since 1986
and more recently has been presenting programs on engineering careers and benefits to
section members and students in Regions 2 and 3.
Outside IEEE, he served on the Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee (JTAC),
as chair of the Engineers & Scientists Joint Committee on Pensions for the American Association of
Engineering Societies, and as a past member of its Engineering Public Policy Council.
In 2000, he participated in a panel presentation and discussion on Life-Long Learning for
the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Earlier, he published an op-ed piece on
pension portability for the National Society of Professional Engineers in their monthly
publication, Engineering Times.
For his work with IEEE-USA, in 1999 he was awarded the
"Distinguished Contributions to Engineering Professionalism," their highest award.
Currently, he serves as Director-elect for Region 3, as chair
of the Communications Committee for IEEE-USA, as a member of the TAB/PSPB Products &
Services Committee, and as a liaison member of the Individual Benefits & Services Committee.
He is also a member of the Board of Governors for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.
Mr. McClure received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Communications)
degree and a Master of Engineering (Instrumentation) degree, both from the University of Florida.
He served as an electronics, operations, and cryptosecurity officer in the U.S. Navy aboard ship,
as an officer-instructor at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy,
and as an operational control officer for antisubmarine warfare in the Naval Air Reserve.
Retired from Martin Marietta Corporation, he has over 30 years experience in military
and commercial communications system design in industry.
He was elected a Fellow of IEEE for his work in improved
spectrum utilization in wireless communications systems.
